Flowers are for the Living

Have you've ever heard the saying "Give me my flowers while I can still smell them?" This quote basically means that we should appreciate, love, and care for the people in our lives while they are here. It's nice to leave flowers at a gravesite but in my opinion, that is more comforting to us than the person who passed. That person is no longer here with us and will not be able to smell or enjoy the flowers.

So what does giving your flowers to the living look like? It looks like checking up on relatives and loved ones. I know life gets busy and it's easy to forget things, but honestly, you make time for the things you love. I'm not trying to judge anyone or make you feel like a terrible person. If I'm being honest I don't always check up on my family and friends; I get busy sometimes and forget. It was just recently (today actually) that I decided to reach out to a few relatives I haven't heard from in a while. With the pandemic and just how crazy our world is I am starting to take this quote more literally. Another day is not promised to us so it's important that we take initiative and start checking on the people we love.

How do you start? It's pretty simple, if you are not fond of speaking on the phone a simple text will suffice. If you are not into house visits try video chatting. My siblings and I have recently started doing zoom calls every week and it's been going pretty well. It doesn't take a lot to show someone you care about them.
